Website Security SSL

Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is used to encrypt a connection to a website. You’ll be used to seeing a padlock in the address bar for secure sites, possibly green areas of the address bar too, depending upon the type of security in use.

Back in 2014 Google announced that they would start improving the ranking of websites that used SSL. There are a range of SSL certificates available depending upon the use required. For a basic website such as this, just a basic certificate can be used. For a commercial website a certificate with a higher warranty, trust level and security level would be required.

Certificates can be purchased from various suppliers. Make sure that you research the providers thoroughly.

Let’s Encrypt is a new SSL issuing organisation, where the certificates are free. This website uses such a certificate.

The certifcates can be handled at your host, or alternatively you can utilise the power of Cloudflare to help handle this for you.

If you are looking for a new website or to update you current website, make sure you know what to look for to ensure you use SSL.
